Here’s another trailer for one of the films screening this week as part of the BAMcinématek tribute to IFC Films. The movie, Ken Loach’s IT’S A FREE WORLD, is also available on the new VOD service IFC Festival Direct.  Keep an eye out for newcomer, Kiersten Wareing, who is fantastic in this.

Trailer for one of the films screening this week as part of the BAMcinématek tribute to IFC Films I posted about yesterday.  I was really moved by THREE TIMES when I first saw it.  Hou Hsiao-Hsien is huge in Taiwan and China but virtually unknown here in the States.  I hope that changes with FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON.

BAMcinématek Tribute to IFC Films →
A week-long celebration of past and future gems from IFC Films’ catalogue of “important foreign and independent films,” including pre-release screenings of Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park, Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Flight of the Red Balloon, Claude Chabrol’s A Girl Cut in Two, and Christophe Honoré’s modern Parisienne musical (and personal favorite on our current...

Oscar Speech Mad-Libs from Radar Mag  →
Here’s mine:  Wow. Oh boy. I wasn’t going to prepare a speech, but my Stepmonster told me I’d jinx myself if I didn’t. So, thanks, Mitzie! [Pause. Inhale deeply. Nod to Jack Nicholson.] I’d like to thank the Academy. I’d like to thank the radiant, heavenly-scented, graying actors I was nominated with. Just to be included in a group with you all is an honor....

Adobe Pushes DRM for Flash Video →
“We imagine that Adobe has no illusions that this will stop copyright infringement — any more than dozens of other DRM systems have done so — but the introduction of encryption does give Adobe and its customers a powerful new legal weapon against competitors and ordinary users through the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).” - Electronic Frontier Foundation

'Frozen River' to open New Directors/New Films →
I was lucky to screen the short this film is based on a few years ago at Two Boots.  It was a compellling story about a subject I knew little about - human trafficking over the US-Canadian border.  It’s nice to see Courtney Hunt getting some recognition for this project a few years later, first at Sundance and now here. Other Sundance films screening at Lincoln Center this year: Trouble the...

defective yeti's Make-Yer-Own Oscar Pool Page →
Nothing makes pretentious, self-congratulatory award ceremonies more enjoyable than having a vested interest in the outcome.  And since none of us are nominated, as far as I know, an Oscar Pool among friends might be the next best thing.

'How to Rob a Bank' trailer on IFCFilms.com →
They usually post a film’s theatrical trailer on this site, since, for the most part, its purpose is to promote a film’s theatrical run.  But because no US theatrical trailer was produced for this film, they ran the VOD spot that Johnny Bergmann edited and I produced.  Our spot for The Killing of John Lennon received the same treatment. It’s nice to see our work out there on the...

LOST: A theory on time travel →
cubicle17:I’m a sucker for anything that attempts to explain LOST. Thankfully, this is one of the more interesting theories I’ve read, even if talk of time travel makes my brain hurt. I’m not sure I completely buy this theory, but it has merit if only for the flux capacitor reference alone.
