Still the Kenyan branch of the Catholic Church teaches abstinence until marriage as only means of prevention:…the Church does not promote the use of condoms as protection against AIDS because sexual intercourse is for the married alone, and using a condom does not make it right in other situations. — dailymehI have news for you: the American government teaches kids here the same thing.  In the last 10 years, the Bush Administration has spent over $1 Billion funding Abstinence-Only programs in public schools, community organizations and religious groups.  And they’re not wrong: completely abstaining from sex is the best way to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS.  However, it’s unrealistic to think — and create public policy based on the idea that — people are going to abstain given research indicating that by age 20, 75% of respondents had had premarital sex (The Guttmacher Institute).This issue is at the core of The American Virgin, Therese Shechter’s feature documentary that examines the impact of myths, misconceptions and cultural beliefs surrounding virginity.  After all, a film about virginity is also a film about sex.  We are currently in production and are raising money to complete shooting.  If you are interesting in this issue and would like to support the cause, please join the Trixie Films mailing list and consider making a tax-deductible donation.
