Unnamed executive at unnamed independent film distributor, criticizing IFC for the impact its day-and-date releasing strategy has affected the specialty film distribution market.
The arguement is based on the antiquated notion that a film isn’t a film if it isn’t released in a theater. I don’t understand this kind of thinking. With On Demand releasing, these films are made available to audiences who live in areas that aren’t served by specialty theaters. It seems to me, the answer is, “Wider than the titles could get solely being released in theaters.”
