    Advertising as Metaphor

Just watched Thomas L. Friedman discussing his new book, Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution - And How it Can Renew America on Meet the Press. Friedman believes America needs to pursue development of E.T. — energy technology — with the same fervor we pursued the a Space Race, and that this Earth Race will creat an energy revolution. The segment was followed by a commercial break containing ads for:

    • Chevron — touting more respectful drilling practices (cue shot of jellyfish) under the tagline “The power of human energy”
    • Dow — taking the needs of human, plant and animal life into account in “The story of a planet where chemisty embraces humanity” (so similar in theme to the Chevron ad that I thought for most of it they were one and the same)
    • Vestas — touting sustainable wind energy
    • Boeing — shots of military planes and servicemen under the line “Delivering the technologies vital to freedom”
    • AIG — a little boy wakes his parents up in the middle of the night, but instead of nightmares, he’s been stressing over whether their retirement plans, health insurance and estate plans are in order

This commercial break couldn’t have underscored Friedman’s thesis better if he’d selected the ads himself.
