When the economy rebounds and programming budgets recover, NBC can go back to developing hour-long dramas for the 10pm slot and shift his time slot again (7pm against ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT, maybe?). AND it solves the problem of giving Conan the show they long ago promised him while keeping Leno from moving to a competing time slot and network.
Bolded for emphasis. Yes, if they did not KEEP Leno at 10pm in perpetuity, it’s not as bad as it initially looks. It’s a great cost-saving move for a brief timeframe when advertising can’t keep up with drama budgets. Leno at 7pm sounds pretty good, actually. (Fresh Leno beats stale syndicated FRIENDS reruns)
